Salt Lake’s transportation future is starting to look a little sci-fi as Tesla’s gold, two-seat Cybercabs have been quietly popping up around town. So, does this mean driverless taxis are headed to Utah?

  • They’re definitely making the rounds. A community-run Cybercab tracker currently ranks Salt Lake City fifth nationally for reported sightings, with 21 logged. [My Cybercab]
  • But don’t delete your Uber app just yet: Tesla’s actual robotaxi ride-hailing service is not operating in Utah as of now. The Cybercabs being tested here have human drivers and temporary steering controls. [TownLift]
  • And the sci-fi factor goes way up from there. Utah is part of a federal pilot program testing electric aircrafts, with plans to eventually let passengers hail air taxis between places like Salt Lake, Provo, and Logan. [Salt Lake Tribune]
  • Futuristic transportation doesn’t automatically mean better transportation. In a recent op-ed in the Salt Lake Tribune, one resident argues that Utah should also be investing in the basics: safer bike infrastructure, better public transit, and streets designed for people outside of cars.
