First Up

If you’ve been waiting for a break from Utah’s brutal heat, don’t count on it. Forecasters say the heat dome parked over the western United States is expected to stick around all week, which could send weekend temperatures in Salt Lake above 100 degrees again.
- WTF is a heat dome? Similar to our winter inversions, a heat dome forms when an area of high atmospheric pressure traps hot air, preventing clouds, rain, and cooler air from developing. [NASA]
- Even nighttime doesn’t offer relief: Salt Lake City recorded a low of 86 degrees early Monday morning, setting a new record for the warmest overnight low and breaking the previous record of 82 degrees. [FOX 13]
- The grid is under pressure: The U.S. Department of Energy issued an emergency order for 17 states including Utah, allowing the Southwest Power Pool to dispatch backup power if needed to help prevent blackouts during the ongoing heat emergency. The order remains in effect through Aug. 3. [U.S. Department of Energy]
- Should Utahns be worried? Not necessarily. The emergency order is designed to prevent outages before they happen. Still, grid operators are asking customers to conserve energy during peak hours, when air-conditioning demand is highest. [City Cast Salt Lake]
- Don’t forget your sunscreen: Utah has the highest melanoma rate in the country, and diagnoses have risen much faster here than the national average over the last 20 years. [Axios Salt Lake City]
