🍦 Smell like Normal Ice Cream
July 17, 2026 · — Terina Ria
Hey, Salt Lake! A small correction: We accidentally put The State Room in our family-friendly section of “Where to watch the World Cup” yesterday. It’s actually 21+ only.
If you are looking for family-friendly fun, make sure you attend 801 Day, presented by Rocky Mountain Power, on Aug. 1 from 5-9 p.m. at the Milk Block. It’s our annual celebration of everything we love about Salt Lake City.
We’ll have a local marketplace, food, drinks, and live music. Plus, you’ll get the very first look at the new mural for “Out of the Blue,” aka the iconic 9th & 9th whale. Admission is free, just RSVP so we know you’re coming!

First Up

The U.S. House just passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make Daylight Saving Time permanent nationwide. The bill still has to pass the Senate, but if it becomes law, we’d stop “springing forward” and “falling back” every year. What does this mean for Utah?
- Need a cheat sheet? Daylight Saving Time is what we’re on now, it shifts us forward an extra hour to keep the sun out later (brighter evenings). Standard Time is what we experience in the winter and is more in sync with the sun itself (brighter mornings). That’s why sleep experts usually favor Standard Time. [Newsweek]
- Winter would look different. The biggest change of permanent DST would come in December and January. Salt Lake City’s latest sunrise would shift to about 8:52 a.m., while the earliest sunset would move to around 5 p.m. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
- Utah is ready for it. In 2020, lawmakers passed a trigger law that says we will make the switch to DST if Congress green lights it and at least four other western states adopt it. [ABC4]
- But not everyone is sold: Some Utah parents worry that permanent DST would mean kids are walking to school or waiting for the bus in the dark. School districts say it’s too early to discuss schedule changes but acknowledge they may need to consider later start times, adjusted bus routes, or better lighting around schools if the law takes effect. Until then, we’ll keep changing our clocks twice a year. [KUTV]

What's CITY Talking About
Three Terms for SLC Mayor?
Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall is considering running for a third term in the 2027 election. Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Luz Escamilla, D-Salt Lake City, says she's in. If both Escamilla and Mendenhall are on the ballot, it'll be a repeat of their 2019 showdown. [Axios Salt Lake City]
Mega Data Center Developer Gets Sued
Two Utah groups — Alliance for a Better Utah and Elevate Strategies — filed a lawsuit against Kevin O' Leary, saying he launched a "smear campaign" against them for their opposition to the Box Elder County data center. O' Leary claimed, without evidence, that they were agents of the Chinese government. His lawyer called the lawsuit a "cash grab." [FOX 13]
Make Normal Ice Cream Your Signature Scent
Who doesn't want to smell like dessert? Solvi, a niche fragrance boutique in Downtown SLC, suggested some perfumes based on popular Normal Ice Cream composed cones. The baklava blossom rec is genius. [Instagram]
New Continuing Education Option
A nonprofit is bringing classes to adults, after the Salt Lake City School District canceled its longtime community education program. Think floral design, Italian, Pilates, and more. Registration opens July 20 for the fall semester. [Reddit]
