🪴 3 plants that thrive in Salt Lake
March 6, 2026 · City Cast Salt Lake podcast host Ali Vallarta edited this week’s newsletter.
Hey, Salt Lake! Have you checked out City Cast’s newest podcast, “Your City Could Be Better?” It’s hosted by our CEO David Plotz and every week he chats it up with our colleagues from City Cast teams across the country.
This week’s episode is an especially great place to start because it features our very own City Cast Salt Lake podcast host Ali Vallarta discussing the state’s plans for a homeless campus.
Other recent episodes dive into topics like data centers in Madison and the anti-ICE movement in the Twin Cities. Listen on YouTube or wherever you get your podcasts.

What's CITY Talking About

Southern Utah Homicides

Lyman Eyes Congress
Former Utah Rep. Phil Lyman announced he is running for Congress in Utah’s 3rd District, challenging incumbent Rep. Celeste Maloy, R-Utah. In the 2024 primary election, Lyman lost by 9 percentage points to Gov. Spencer Cox. [Utah Political Watch, State of Utah]
And Owens Won’t Run Again
Rep. Burgess Owens, R-Utah, announced he will not seek reelection in the fall, stepping away after three terms representing Utah’s 4th congressional District. His decision comes after a court-ordered redraw of Utah’s congressional map created a Democrat-leaning district in Salt Lake County. [Salt Lake Tribune 🔒]
$26M for Lane Visibility
The Utah Department of Transportation spent $26 million adding high-visibility contrast lane striping on major highways in Salt Lake, Davis, and Utah Counties. Despite that, lane markings remain notoriously hard to see in wet conditions. [FOX 13]
