What's CITY Talking About
Utah Buys US Magnesium
Utah purchased the defunct US Magnesium plant, gaining control of 4,500 acres, infrastructure, and water rights along the Great Salt Lake’s southwest shore. The state plans to donate the former water use to benefit the lake after years of environmental violations by the company. [Salt Lake Tribune 🔒]
Governor Urges Snow Prayers
Gov. Spencer Cox is once again urging people of all faiths to pray for snow as Utah’s snowpack hovers near historic lows, about 60% of the late-January median, threatening water supplies that rely almost entirely on mountain snow. [KSL]
Exploding Trees??
If you’ve been online you may have heard of exploding trees. Turns out, it’s a phenomenon called frost cracking, a natural process when rapidly freezing water inside a tree causes the wood to split with a sharp pop. While the sound can be startling, it’s not dangerous, and most trees heal on their own once temperatures warm. [FOX 13]
The Future of Downtown SLC
SLC Mayor Erin Mendenhall gave her annual State of the City address last night, and the future of downtown was a key theme. What’s the newest project? [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
