2 people killed outside LDS church

January 8, 2026

Hey, Salt Lake. Last night, a shooting during a funeral in Salt Lake City resulted in two people dead and several others injured, leaving the Westside neighborhood reeling.

This tragedy comes as Minneapolis grapples with the fatal shooting of a woman by federal ICE agents, highlighting another act of senseless violence across the country.

It’s hard to find the right words to say when our communities are confronting grief and fear, but in Salt Lake City, it’s heartening to see neighbors and loved ones come together to comfort one another.

Find out more details below and on the City Cast Salt Lake podcast later this morning.

What's CITY Talking About

Two Dead in Funeral Shooting

A shooting Wednesday night during a funeral at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in Salt Lake City left two dead and multiple people injured. Authorities say the incident was not random and there is no ongoing threat. The church primarily serves Tongan congregations, and many attendees were members of the Pacific Islander and LDS communities. [ABC 4]

ACLU Sues Over Book Ban

The ACLU of Utah has filed a federal lawsuit arguing that Utah’s book ban law unconstitutionally censors public school libraries. The case is backed by authors, including the estate of Kurt Vonnegut, and local students. [ACLU of Utah]

Prescription Renewals Go AI

Utah just became the first state to let AI handle certain prescription renewals. The system also checks for dangerous drug interactions. But experts warn that taking doctors out of the loop could come with risks. [Deseret News]

Hey Salt Lake readers share their best tips on air travel and what to order at Cluck Truck.

On Your Love for Cluck Truck

City Cast Salt Lake social media manager Molly Miloscia included Cluck Truck in the Salt Lake things she’s grateful for, and many of you agree!

“The loaded chicken and fries at the Cluck Truck restaurant. You can get your chicken regular or spicy. Be sure to add a little extra pico (best ever!) on top! Secret tip: Order the fries cajun style and ask for extra chipotle lime sauce.” — Brad and Ginger D.

On Airport Hacks

We shared airport hacks before the holiday season and one reader offered their best tips, too.

“The best time of the week to fly is Saturday late afternoon. It's true that early morning flights are the least delayed, but plan additional time to go through security. Most travellers want to start early, so TSA is busiest around 5-6:30 a.m. every morning.

Always ask nicely at the gate if they need volunteers for the exit row. Often you'll get a seat with extra leg room. If not, they will often offer to reseat you at least to an aisle or window if it’s available.

Discount airlines are actually easier to board, fly more direct, and are easier to get perks like free trips than the big airlines. I would avoid Spirit right now because it's highly likely they will stop flying soon and you don't want to get stuck without a ticket.” — Jeff
