🫶 $430K for Main Street workers
August 19, 2025 · Thanks to City Cast Salt Lake executive producer Emily Means for writing What Salt Lake’s Talking About.
Hey, Salt Lake! It’s back-to-school week for many Utahns, and Weber State University just became the first public school in the state approved to offer an accelerated three-year bachelor’s degree.

What's CITY Talking About?

$430K for Main Street Bar Workers
The first checks will be distributed today, after Salt Lakers raised more than $430,000 for workers affected by the Main Street fire that burned Los Tapatios, London Belle, White Horse, and Whiskey Street in downtown SLC. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Back to School in the Heat
Kids across Salt Lake City head back to school this week, and almost 80% of them are learning in extreme urban heat zones. Those neighborhoods are extra hot due to the "heat island effect," where the built environment traps heat and can bump temps up by 8 degrees Fahrenheit. [Axios]

Utah Tanks on Women's Equality
You hate to see it: Utah is ranked the worst state for women's equality, and it's not even close. The Beehive State sits at the bottom of the pack for workplace environment and education and health disparities — nearly 12 points behind number 49, Texas. [WalletHub]
State Investigates Fishy Situation in Lehi
The Utah Division of Water Quality is trying to figure out why dead fish are popping up along the Jordan River in Utah County. Officials say the stinky situation is likely related to an algal bloom that originated in Utah Lake or unusually warm water temperatures. [KSL]

Salt Lake Chatter

You all always have the best takes. From free museum tips to what voters are talking about, here’s what Hey Salt Lake readers had to share this week.
🗳️ On Municipal Elections
“In Kearns, what voters are talking about most is the fact that mayoral candidates do not disclose their political affiliations. The reason given is ‘the mayor should work for all people in our city.’ In theory, this sounds altruistic, but mayors in other cities disclose their political affiliations and still are able to work for all the people in the city. It seems shady to many in Kearns to not know which way candidates lean, and since this is our first major election since becoming a city in 2024, it could set the tone for future elections.” — Jennafer
♥️ On Favorite Main Street Memories
“When my dad took me to Lamb’s Grill (now closed)” — Amy R.
🥂 On the Best Summer Date
“Best summer date is … go have a two hour sauna/soak/cold plunge at Glow. Then shower off and walk across the courtyard to Forty Three Bakery. Everything they make is outstanding. If you go earlier in the day they have great coffee, pastries, and brunch. Wednesdays through Saturdays they serve dinner and it is absolutely amazing. I love this for dates with my husband, friend dates, or just by myself.” — Hilary B.
🖼️ On Free Museums
“The Alf Engen Museum and the Eccles 2002 Olympic Winter Games Museum, both located at the Utah Olympic Park, are FREE for EVERYONE. Open seven days a week, 365 days a year.” — Megan U.
