US Magnesium Layoffs

US Magnesium LLC will lay off 186 workers (85% of the company’s workforce) and is temporarily pausing operations at its Tooele County plant, citing less demand due to a global oversupply. The company is North America’s largest magnesium producer and has faced scrutiny for its environmental violations from leeching pollution into Utah’s air. [Salt Lake Tribune]

LDS Church Plans Demolition

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ commercial real estate arm is preparing to demolish a 68-year-old building near the Salt Lake Temple, citing irreparable damage from the 2020 earthquake. The building formerly housed Utah Woolen Mills (a men’s fashion shop) which relocated due to the broader renovations happening around the temple. [KSL]

A Drier Winter

It’s looking like Utah’s winter may be drier and warmer than usual, driven in part by a developing La Niña and other climate patterns. This could affect snowpack, which is the source of 95% of Utah’s water supply. [KUER]
