August 19, 2024 · Thanks to City Cast Salt Lake producer Ivana Martinez for writing today’s article on deals.
Hey, Salt Lake! In the age of extreme couponing, we’re looking for all the deals we can get. Today, we’re sharing some discounts for students and teachers.
What's CITY Talking About?
$2.8 Million First Day of School
Most kids are back to school tomorrow, as a disillusioning $2.8 million in student lunch debt looms over our state — nearly $600,000 from just the Granite School District in Salt Lake County. Past efforts to resolve this issue have failed in the Utah Legislature, but Rep. Tyler Clancy, R-Provo, is feeling optimistic about this year’s attempt. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
We talk about kind of the rugged individualism of the pioneers, but certainly there was a community element. They wouldn't have made it across the plains if they weren't looking after one another.
Former Senator Karen Mayne Dies at 78
Former Utah State Sen. Karen Mayne, D-Taylorsville, has died at age 78. Her colleagues remember her as a “trailblazer and exceptional leader who showed us how working together, despite political differences, can strengthen our state.” Mayne served in the Utah Legislature for 15 years before resigning in 2023 for health reasons. King & Lyman vs. Cox
Democratic candidate Brian King and write-in candidate Phil Lyman joined forces in an ad to criticize Utah Gov. Spencer Cox. Using Cox’s own “Disagree Better” initiative, they pointed out both their political differences and their shared disapproval of the incumbent. [ABC 4]

Where Is It?
Shoutout to all of you who correctly guessed the location of this heart sculpture. It’s located in a private sculpture garden around Fairfax Road and Virginia Street near Shriners Children’s Hospital.
Next up, we have a wooden firefighter. Do you know where it’s located?
