Court Sides With Voter Initiatives

The Utah Supreme Court ruled that state lawmakers overstepped their authority by altering a voter-approved initiative to establish an independent redistricting commission. The court emphasized that the people’s right to reform the government through initiatives is protected from legislative interference. This decision gives gerrymandering lawsuits the go-ahead in lower courts. [KSL]

The Other Place Diner

A much-loved Salt Lake eating establishment, The Other Place diner, will no longer be turned into an apartment building. The developer, Indiana-based group Trinitas Venture, initially proposed building 150 units with the restaurant owner's permission, but recently withdrew its application. The proposal received significant backlash from loyal patrons. For now, the owner plans to keep the restaurant running. [Building Salt Lake]
