What's CITY Talking About?

Dunkin’ Comeback

A Dunkin’ sign was spotted in West Jordan, meaning the coffee and donut chain is making its way back to Utah. In 2020, Dunkin’ (formerly Dunkin’ Donuts) closed hundreds of locations nationwide including a handful of locations around Salt Lake. Currently, only one location stands at Hill Air Force Base. Good News For Roadtrippers

Gas prices in Utah are decreasing just in time for Memorial Day travel. Overall, it’s $0.40 cheaper per gallon to fill your tank compared to this time last year. Utah saw one of the largest weekly price drops in the country, driven by lower demand and reduced oil costs. In Salt Lake City, gas is around $3.62 per gallon, although prices in remote areas like Wayne County remain high (around $4.11 per gallon). [FOX 13]

Affordable Housing

Advocates for unsheltered Utahns are urging Salt Lake City to include affordable housing in plans for a new downtown sports and entertainment district. In a letter to SLC Mayor Erin Mendenhall and the City Council, the executive director of Crossroads Urban Center asked that up to 20% of new housing be reserved for low-income residents. This call to action comes ahead of tonight’s public hearing to raise SLC sales tax by 0.5% to fund a proposal by Smith Entertainment Group. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Water & Taxes Rising

Heading into a long weekend, our water levels are looking good. So, what should and shouldn’t you expect from our western water crisis this summer? Plus, the city council is hearing public comment on three tax increases tonight. What are they and how much do they amount to for the average homeowner? [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Transforming lives and communities through education

SLCC graduates are hard workers and smart decision-makers. 81% graduate with no or little debt. They opted for a school where they are in a class of 20 not 100—It’s nice when a teacher knows your name. Did we mention trailblazers? Almost half are first-generation students. Look for that on a résumé.
