💔 What happens if Sundance leaves?
May 8, 2024 · Thanks to Ali Vallarta for editing today’s newsletter.
Hey, Salt Lake! U.S. News and World Report just named Utah the No. 1 Best State Overall for the second year. The Report uses 71 different metrics across eight categories.

What's CITY Talking About?
Thousands of False Trans Bathroom Ban Reports
Within 72 hours of its launch, a reporting tool that enforces Utah’s transgender bathroom ban received nearly 4,000 complaints, all deemed “bogus” by the auditor’s office. The law, which went into effect May 1, prohibits transgender people from using certain bathrooms and facilities that align with their gender identity in government-owned buildings and public schools. States with similar policies have seen the same type of protest flooding. The auditor’s office expressed frustration with being tasked with enforcing the law, but not consulted when it was conceived. West Valley Performing Arts Center To Close
The much loved West Valley Performing Arts Center is closing due to structural issues and high renovation costs. Despite its rich history of award-winning performances, fundraising efforts were unsuccessful. West Valley Arts will continue to foster creativity in the community through programs and initiatives at the Utah Cultural Celebration Center. [FOX 13]
Utah’s Miss USA Steps Down
Noelia Voigt, Utah’s first Miss USA in half a century and the first Venezuelan-American to win, has relinquished her crown. She announced her resignation on social media, citing the need to prioritize her “physical and mental well-being.” The Miss USA organization expressed its support and will name a successor soon. Why Sundance Needs a Vision
While there’s speculation about Sundance and Utah parting ways, there’s a little more to the story. Last year, the Sundance Film Festival reported a $6 million gap between its revenue and its earnings. Then, its fairly new CEO stepped down. And now, the iconic Park City event has gathered bids for a new home. Which begs the question: Is Sundance OK? [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
