What's CITY Talking About?

Is House Flipping Out?

While Utah ranks among the highest rates of house flipping in the U.S., we’re one of the least profitable states for it, and flippers seem to be noticing that trend. House flipping peaked in 2006 but has steadily declined. In Utah, only around 3,700 homes were flipped in the past year, which is down about 22% since 2022. [Axios SLC]

Pedestrian Accidents

Take extra precautions when driving around the city; there have been numerous pedestrian-involved accidents in the news lately. Recently, a motorist hit a family in a crosswalk in Millcreek, and another fatally hit a scooterist in the Fairpark neighborhood. [KSL]

When To Water Your Lawn

Wondering when to water your lawn? Experts recommend waiting until after April showers. And while there’s not a definitive day to start watering (it depends on the weather), around mid-May is generally good. The Utah Division of Water Resources has a handy lawn watering guide. But when in doubt, avoid overwatering, choose drought-resistant grass, and check grass condition and soil moisture before watering. If the grass blades stay bent or the soil is dry beyond an inch, your lawn is thirsty. [Salt Lake Tribune]

It’s in the Air

We’ve got 10 years to clear the air before hosting the Winter Olympics again, and sometimes it feels like we are not making progress; from the proposed mine in Parley’s Canyon to the shrinking Great Salt Lake, to our governor asking federal air quality regulators to back off Utah. On the City Cast Salt Lake podcast, we talked to an air quality expert for a little optimism and to bust some air quality myths. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

SLCC graduates are hard workers and smart decision-makers. 81% graduate with no or little debt. They opted for a school where they are in a class of 20 not 100—It’s nice when a teacher knows your name. Did we mention trailblazers? Almost half are first-generation students. Look for that on a résumé.

Busting Salt Lake’s Air Quality Myths

Salt Lakers tend to think of our city’s battle with air quality as recent history — but that’s not really true. In fact, this might be the cleanest our air has been in a while. Dr. Logan Mitchell, a climate scientist and analyst with Utah Clean Energy, helps host Ali Vallarta understand some of the myths around the air you can chew, where we go from here, and how to keep our lungs safe.
