Hey, Salt Lake! Question for you: What’s a fun activity to do with your friends that’s not going out to eat?

What's CITY Talking About?
The Show Will Go On
Salt Lake City’s cherished backyard concerts will continue … with some restrictions. Carolyn Turkanis has hosted summer concerts in her backyard for nearly 25 years. A couple months ago, they got shut down by the city for noise and street congestion, among other things. Now, after public outcry, the city will allow the gatherings if frequency is reduced and they’re not promoted publicly. [Building Salt Lake]

Navajo Nation Calls for RECA Expansion
Utahns who were exposed to nuclear testing and uranium mining, known as “downwinders,” may soon lose their compensation when the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act sunsets on June 10. The exposure has caused various diseases and cancer for thousands of people. Utah legislators are co-sponsoring a two-year extension, but Navajo Nation president Buu Nygren wants the program expanded for affected individuals. [KUER]
Statewide Book Ban
Select Utah school districts and charter schools have banned over 260 books since the sensitive materials law was implemented in 2022. A new law in effect July 1 could mean a statewide ban on a book if at least three school districts (or two school districts and five charter schools) ban that title. The Utah State Board of Education is retroactively assessing the list to see if past decisions qualify under that new criteria. The USBE also has the option to intervene. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Transforming lives and communities through education
SLCC graduates are hard workers and smart decision-makers. 81% graduate with no or little debt. They opted for a school where they are in a class of 20 not 100—It’s nice when a teacher knows your name. Did we mention trailblazers? Almost half are first-generation students. Look for that on a résumé.
