What's CITY Talking About?

Utah-Made Western Is Headed to Cannes

Kevin Costner’s Western, “Horizon, an American Saga,” primarily filmed in southern Utah, is premiering at the Cannes Film Festival. Costner seems to have an affinity for the Beehive State since he’s also building a $40 million film studio in St. George. [KSL, Salt Lake Tribune]

Name That NHL Team

What would you name our National Hockey League team? I mean, if we had one of course. Utah Jazz owner Ryan Smith, who submitted a bid for Utah’s first NHL earlier this year, is now workshopping names and he wants to hear from you. However, there’s been no word yet on whether the bid was successful. [ABC 4]

Report Your Potholes

Salt Lake City repaired over 38,000 potholes in 2023. This week, they’re dispatching extra crews to help fix the roads. Report potholes through the service request form or by calling 801-535-2345. [@slcmayor/X formerly known as Twitter]

Preparing for the Olympic Dream

The International Olympic Committee is here this week touring venues for the 2034 Winter Games, which SLC will almost definitely host. City Cast Salt Lake podcast host Ali Vallarta had a friendly debate with an Olympian and chair of Salt Lake’s bid on the merits of bringing back the games. Can Salt Lake Really Pull Off Another Olympics?

Members of the International Olympic Committee are visiting Salt Lake this week before almost certainly awarding us the 2034 Winter Games. City and state leaders — and most Utahns! — are super hyped on the prospect of bringing another Olympics to our state. But not all SLC residents are convinced we need a do-over of the ‘02 games — including host Ali Vallarta. Catherine Raney-Norman, a four-time Olympian and chair of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games, makes her case for bringing the Olympic dream back to our city.

Never forget.
