What's CITY Talking About?

The Blue Airport Tunnel

Take a peek at the River Tunnel connecting concourses A & B at the Salt Lake City airport. It’s set to open in October. The tunnel artist, Gordon Huether, said it will feature a water-themed playlist as passengers walk through. But sad news: There won’t be a whale tribute or boat tour section. Dark Sky Month

April has been declared Dark Sky Month for four years in a row by Gov. Spencer Cox. Utah has a whopping 25 locations on the DarkSky International list. Pretty cool, since 80% of North America can’t see the Milky Way. [Utah News Dispatch]

James Beard Award Finalists

Congrats to Mazza Cafe (chef Ali Sabbah) and Urban Hill (chef Nick Zocco) for being James Beard Award Finalists for the mountain region of Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, and Utah. Winners will be announced in June. [Axios Salt Lake City]

The LDS Church’s Instagram Fiasco

This weekend is General Conference, when Latter-day Saints from around the world gather at the church’s headquarters in downtown Salt Lake City. And the timing is impeccable for some LDS women who are up in arms about a recent Church Instagram fiasco. As residents of a place that often struggles to untangle church and state, where could LDS women’s frustration lead us? And what is the tea? [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Salt Lake Chatter

Today’s “Chatter” is a darn good example of the allure of Small Lake City.

🤡 On the Dee’s Clown

We were trying to get the tea on the old Dee’s Hamburgers and their clown mascot aka why did they get rid of the clown?

“My dad worked for Young Sign Company as a graphic artist at the time they were hired to design the clown. There was never a cease-and-desist order [from McDonald’s].” — Amy R.

🧵 On Sewciety

ICYMI, catch up on our spotlight of local business Salt Lake Sewciety.

“I am so glad you found Sewciety! Delaney [Sewciety’s owner] is seriously the nicest person ever. I almost don’t want to share this, but you can rent studio space by the hour and it’s literally the most chill, lovely space to work as I cut fabric for quilts. I love the community she has created.” — Kate R.

“We recently had an event hosted by the wonderful owner of Salt Lake Sewciety, Delaney, where each attendee was encouraged to make their own outfit. It was an absolute treat and really brought our community of younger generation sewists together. I wanted to give a shout out to the sewing community as a third space here in Salt Lake.” — Jacqueline C.

The Instagram post that sparked some heated debate on women’s authority in the church. (@churchofjesuschrist/Instagram)

Why 1,000s of LDS Women Are Big Mad Online

What would happen if women left the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? This weekend is General Conference for the Salt Lake City-based, global religion, and a recent Instagram post elicited thousands of comments by frustrated women members. Cynthia Winward, co-host of the At Last She Said It Podcast, joins host Ali Vallarta to give an on-the-ground analysis of how women in the church are feeling and where this sentiment could lead Utah.

Have you basked in the sun yet? ☀️
