🇯🇵 The future of Salt Lake City's Japantown
March 22, 2024
Hello again, Salt Lake! Terina here. And can I just say, it’s good to be back in your inbox.

What's CITY Talking About?
The Future of Japantown
Recent legislation approved the revitalization of downtown Salt Lake City through a new sports arena, but what does that mean for Japantown? This historic neighborhood, where Japanese immigrants settled in the late 1800s, has since been condensed to a block. Efforts to improve Japantown began in 2018 but slowed due to funding challenges and changes in municipal officials. Now, city leaders are hopeful they can incorporate Japantown in the revitalization, but nothing is set in stone. [KSL]

High School Clinic
West High School’s new medical clinic, the first of its kind in the state, has opened its doors to students. The clinic, run in partnership with the University of Utah, offers primary care services, immunizations, and mental health support. They accept most insurances, including Medicaid and CHIP, and may offer financial assistance for those that are uninsured. [Salt Lake Tribune]
Train to L.A.?
Despite missing out on funding for studies regarding trains to Las Vegas and Boise, Salt Lake City is in contention for two possible rail routes to Los Angeles and Seattle. The Federal Railroad Administration has identified our city in preferred routes from Denver to Seattle and Denver to Los Angeles. These routes are in the very early planning stages, with next steps expected in the spring. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Transforming lives and communities through education
SLCC graduates are hard workers and smart decision-makers. 81% graduate with no or little debt. They opted for a school where they are in a class of 20 not 100—It’s nice when a teacher knows your name. Did we mention trailblazers? Almost half are first-generation students. Look for that on a résumé.
