What's CITY Talking About?

Business Is Good

The number of women-owned businesses opening in Salt Lake City rose 26% in 2023 — that’s more than the 17% average increase across the country. Experts attribute the trend to the desire for flexibility and autonomy post-pandemic, prompting many women to pursue entrepreneurship. [Axios Salt Lake]

Housing Concerns

Owners of the low-income, downtown SLC apartment complex Pauline Downs are under fire for perpetuating poor living conditions. One of the investor owners, Cory Waddoups, blames the issues on the neighborhood’s unhoused residents, but footage revealed ongoing deteriorating living conditions, including feces, drug paraphernalia, and vandalism. The Utah Housing Corporation is working closely with ownership to enforce compliance with affordable housing standards. The entire complex has been listed for sale for more than a year. Power Struggle

The Intermountain Power Agency is urging Gov. Spencer Cox to veto SB161, a recently passed energy bill, citing potential repercussions for Utah’s energy infrastructure. The legislation, which could force the sale of a coal-fired plant to the state in order to keep it in operation, has raised concerns about meeting electricity demands and violating agreements with the EPA. Less Cheese, More Water

It’s no secret that water conservation is increasingly important in the west. But Gov. Spencer Cox is not responding well to the suggestion that we eat less cheese and beef — so now what? [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Transforming lives and communities through education

SLCC graduates are hard workers and smart decision-makers. 81% graduate with no or little debt. They opted for a school where they are in a class of 20 not 100—It’s nice when a teacher knows your name. Did we mention trailblazers? Almost half are first-generation students. Look for that on a résumé.
