🌸 What’s blooming in Salt Lake
March 19, 2024
Happy first day of spring! I have a guide to blooms and what to start planting in your home garden today. And for the basketball fans, it’s time to pick up (resale) tickets to March Madness in Salt Lake.

What's CITY Talking About?
Best In … Smog?
Utah ranks 19th among states in per capita emissions and 29th in total carbon monoxide emissions from energy, according to 2021 data. Contributing factors include reliance on coal-powered electricity and our love of larger vehicles. The average Utahn generates 3.5 tons more carbon dioxide annually than the average American. The Beehive Files
A recent study from the University of Utah identified rural parts of the state as a hot spot for UFO sightings. The study analyzed sighting data from 2001 to 2020 and revealed trends influenced by both environmental and cultural factors. Researchers hope to use the data to help destigmatize UFO research and prompt further scientific inquiry into the phenomenon. [KUER]
If you see something you can't explain, why can't you ask? And why would you not approach that scientifically?
It’s Not Just You
Springtime is getting hotter — Salt Lake City’s temperatures rose by 4.5 degrees fahrenheit on average between 1970 and 2023. The figure mirrors a broader pattern across much of the western United States, with places like Reno and Las Vegas seeing the highest rise. Warmer temperatures in the spring affect things like drinking water supplies, longer allergy seasons, and agricultural operations. [Axios Salt Lake]
The Trial of the Century
“Gwyneth Goes Skiing,” a satirical play based on actor Gwyneth Paltrow’s infamous ski incident and the courtroom drama that followed, will make its U.S. premiere at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre in May. We spoke to the writers and stars of the production to revisit the scene of the crime. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Transforming lives and communities through education
SLCC graduates are hard workers and smart decision-makers. 81% graduate with no or little debt. They opted for a school where they are in a class of 20 not 100—It’s nice when a teacher knows your name. Did we mention trailblazers? Almost half are first-generation students. Look for that on a résumé.

Today on City Cast

The Trial of the Century Returns to Utah
If Utahns thought they’d seen the last of Academy Award winner Gwyneth Paltrow after her 2023 ski trial in Park City, they were wrong… kinda. “Gwyn'' is back and center stage at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre for the U.S. premiere of “Gwyneth Goes Skiing,” a satirical play based on Paltrow’s ski-slope collision with retired optometrist Terry Sanderson and the courtroom showdown that followed. Joseph Martin and Linus Karp, writers and stars of the production, join host Ali Vallarta to share their favorite jokes-as-couplets and ask Salt Lakers for help returning to the scene of the crime.

That’s it for today. Catch y’all tomorrow!
