✈️ Who funds the SLC airport?
March 18, 2024
Good morning! With a new week comes new ideas. A coworker shared a story about unpopular opinions from Philly residents, and as a part-time grump, I’m intrigued.
So, I want to know: What are your hot takes about Salt Lake City? 👀

What's CITY Talking About?
Censure Ends in Handcuffs
South Salt Lake Councilmember Paul Sanchez was arrested for trespassing at city hall after defying a recent censure imposed by the council. Sanchez, embroiled in allegations of corruption against city officials, attempted to enter the hall despite being barred during council meetings. The councilman called the censure “hot air” and an infringement on his First Amendment right — neither of which appealed to the arresting officers. [Utah News Dispatch]
Riding Into the Future
The Utah Transit Authority has formally approved its long-range transit plan, UTA Moves 2050, aimed at addressing growing public transportation needs in the region over the next 30 years. The plan includes strategies for infrastructure maintenance, expanding service frequency to 15-minute or better stop intervals, and supporting transit-oriented development. From Neutrality to Opposition
The Utah Education Association, the state’s largest teachers union, opposes a proposed constitutional amendment removing funding protection for education in exchange for eliminating the state portion of sales tax on food. The shift follows concerns over increased funding for a private voucher program from income tax revenues, prompting worries about accountability and resource allocation. Utah voters will decide the fate of the amendment in November. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Disability Wages
The Legislature failed to pass two different bills that would have made life easier for Utahns who have a disability, despite making up more than 25% of the state’s population. Advocate and former journalist Shelby Hintze tells us why she thinks Utah’s cultural approach to disability limits our local economies. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Transforming lives and communities through education
SLCC graduates are hard workers and smart decision-makers. 81% graduate with no or little debt. They opted for a school where they are in a class of 20 not 100—It’s nice when a teacher knows your name. Did we mention trailblazers? Almost half are first-generation students. Look for that on a résumé.

Where Is It?

This one stumped you! I’m going to give you another shot at guessing where this mini art gallery is.
🧐 Hint: It’s somewhere near a TRAX station in the Central Ninth neighborhood.
And in the spirit of tiny things, here’s one of my favorite artists, Luis Eduardo de León, who creates hyper realistic miniature cityscapes from my hometown in Ciudad Juárez.

Today on City Cast
Something a lot of disabled activists say is everyone is going to be disabled at some point. Everybody's going to age, everybody's going to have a time where they have some sort of disability. So if you think this doesn't impact you, it just doesn't impact you yet.
Subminimum Wage, Health Care Traps, and Disability Visibility
More than 25% of Utah adults have a disability. So why didn’t the Legislature pass two bills that could have made life better for them? Advocate and former journalist Shelby Hintze joins host Ali Vallarta to explain how Utah’s cultural approach to disability limits our local economies.

Shout out to local icon Nick Rimando, the Real Monarchs’ new goalkeeper coach. ⚽🐐
