What's CITY Talking About?

SLC Renters Portal

Salt Lake City introduced a new consumer protection portal, prioritizing housing-related concerns faced by renters like maintenance issues and retaliatory eviction threats, among other landlord-tenant disputes. Renters can now submit complaints or request assistance online, with the city offering referrals and legal aid resources. The city says all complaints will be responded to within five business days. Not comfortable submitting a complaint online? You can also file a request in person at the Salt Lake City and County building in room 445. [Salt Lake Tribune]

A New Name for DEI

Utah Valley University in Provo has become the first school in the state to comply with a controversial anti-DEI bill, stripping “diversity” and “inclusion” from its central office for underrepresented students. The campus center is now called the Office of Institutional Engagement and Effectiveness. Under HB261, all Utah public schools are barred from using such language and must comply by July 1. UVU succeeds when all members of our community are seen, valued, welcomed, respected, included, represented and heard.

The Puck Stops Here

Salt Lake City officials received a firm message from the International Olympic Committee regarding loose plans to justify new NHL and MLB stadiums with Salt Lake’s bid for the 2034 Winter Games. IOC executive Christophe Dubi emphasized that while existing venues may be considered, stadium construction shouldn’t be tied to hosting the Olympics. The IOC’s focus on sustainability favors utilizing established infrastructure rather than investing in new taxpayer-funded facilities. [KSL]

SLC Funds Airbnb Crackdown

The abundance of short term rentals like Airbnb and Vrbo are not particularly helpful to the housing crisis. The City Council just passed a budget amendment to help crack down on such rentals and alleviate the shortage of homes. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
