🚌 How to public transit like a pro
March 11, 2024
Hey, Salt Lake! Today, we have a guide to public transit for you. Plus, a “Where Is It?” of miniature proportions.

What's CITY Talking About?
Affordable Housing in South Salt Lake
A site that would’ve been a Porsche dealership in South Salt Lake is now being considered by developers for affordable housing. Blaser Ventures, the firm that established the Post District, wants to incorporate 500 new units alongside retail spaces. [Building Salt Lake]
Fry Sauce Day
The iconic state condiment of ketchup and mayo officially has its own day. Gov. Cox declared March 8 Fry Sauce Day in Utah. [ABC 4]

Geothermal Energy
Advanced geothermal technologies offer a way to turn the Earth’s natural underground heat into electricity, shifting America’s reliance on fossil fuels. Fervo Energy’s Cape Station in Utah has demonstrated a lot of success with this method but the electricity they produced is being sent to California. This is largely because the Utah Legislature is focused on coal production over geothermal. [KUER]
What Can Municipal Gov. Do?
Salt Lakers often hear from our city and county leaders that all roads lead to the Utah Legislature — and that’s largely true. But there are creative ways that local government can flex its muscles against unpopular ideas from Capitol Hill. Consider this your post-Legislature pep talk, plus some ideas for what cities and counties could do to push back against the “culture war” issues our lawmakers are obsessed with. Where Is It?

Many of you correctly guessed the location of the Dee’s Hamburgers that was on 200 S. and State Street. I’m wondering, though: Does anyone know the history of the clown? Was it only a Dee’s Hamburgers mascot? Did Dee’s have to get rid of the clown because of a cease and desist by Mcdonald’s? Inquiring minds want to know.

Next up, where is the mini art gallery hidden in plain sight?
On a side note: I’ve been obsessed with miniatures ever since I saw this masterpiece at Atelier. Does anyone know of a miniature crafting group (or something), or do we need to make one? 👀

Local Solutions to Utah’s Culture War Laws
Salt Lakers often hear from local officials that all roads lead to the Utah Legislature — and that’s largely true. But there are creative ways that local government can flex its muscles against unpopular ideas from Capitol Hill. Former Salt Lake County Council member Shireen Ghorbani joins host Ali Vallarta to offer a post-Legislature pep talk and break down what cities and counties could do to push back against three “culture war” issues: banning abortion, policies that target transgender people, and rolling back diversity programs.
