City Cast Salt Lake

🐦 How to help birds for the spring migration

March 7, 2024

Hey, Salt Lake! Sometimes I have ideas about starting a City Cast Salt Lake directory. Like who do I call if I need a cobbler for example? What do you think about this?

What's CITY Talking About?

Caucus Night Confusion

Utah Republican voters expressed frustration over the GOP’s decision to conduct a presidential preference poll at local caucus meetings rather than through a state-run primary. This required pre-registration and in-person attendance. Some faced extremely long lines and said the process was disorganized and confusing. The Democratic primary was called for Joe Biden, and Donald Trump became Utah’s pick for president. [KUER]

400 S. Viaduct Trail

Could we see a 9 Line Trail for 400 S. in Salt Lake City? Officials are working on a plan that would bring a multipurpose path to the busy street, connecting east and west, similar to the recently finished bike/pedestrian project on 900 S. Construction is set to begin in 2025. The public can submit their feedback on the project through the city’s survey. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Turning Old Buildings into Housing

There’s a new proposal that would incentivize developers to turn older buildings into housing. Salt Lake City has around 300 historic sites. According to the United Nations, the construction industry contributes to 37% of global emissions, and repurposing old buildings is one of the most effective strategies for reducing emissions. The Emerald Ribbon

SLC Public Lands is undertaking a process to remediate the Jordan River, a crown jewel of our city that runs from Utah Lake to the Great Salt Lake along the west side. You can vote on your favorite of three design concepts for the river, but in order to make informed decisions, let’s do a little mythbusting. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Salt Lake Chatter

Hey Salt Lake readers are getting out of the house this month — going to soccer games, winter hiking, and making friends.

🤝 On Making Friends in SLC

“There is also SLICE Utah [in] South Salt Lake that offers cooking classes.” — Cheri S.

“I met all of my friends through Ecstatic Dance! They have them twice a week in SLC, Sundays at Clubhouse SLC, and Wednesdays at the SLC Krishna temple.” — Maizy A.

🥾 On a Winter Hike

“I would suggest hiking up to the mouth of Adams Falls Canyon, and then going north or south (for a longer hike) on the shoreline trail. You might run into a bit of snow or ice on the trail, and crossing the canyon streams could be tricky, but nothing that a good pair of hiking boots can't handle unless you're old like me.” — Judy V.

🍀 On March Plans

“We are very excited to go to the RSL home opener on Saturday, March 2 and to the Royals home opener on Saturday, March 16.” — Melissa L.

Mythbusting the Jordan River

Salt Lake City Public Lands has released three different design concepts to reimagine the Jordan River corridor, which flows straight into the shrinking Great Salt Lake. Park ranger Owen Carroll joins host Ali Vallarta to mythbust nasty rumors about SLC’s “Emerald Ribbon” before you vote on your favorite.
