☕️ A long-awaited coffee shop opens in Fairpark
March 5, 2024
Good morning! In today’s newsletter, we’re highlighting a new coffee shop in the Fairpark neighborhood: Culture Coffee.

What's CITY Talking About?

Tumbleweed Takeover
Before the snowstorm moved in last weekend, we were met with strong winds causing damage across Utah. Were you in an area that was also taken over by tumbleweeds? Pictured above is my partner’s car, completely shrouded in tumbleweeds, in the Fairpark neighborhood. A TikTok video also shows an invasion of them in Daybreak. [City Cast Salt Lake, KSL]
Off-the-Grid Community
Riverbend Ranch, located in Utah’s West Desert, is a 1,245-acre off the grid agricultural cooperative. But don’t call them preppers; it’s a lifestyle. Residents are seeking to produce their own power, grow food, and be completely self-sufficient. It’s divided into lots, and residents pay $35,000 for two acres and water rights. So far, about 120 people live on the cooperative full time. [Salt Lake Tribune 🔒]

Super Tuesday
Today is Super Tuesday, a pivotal presidential primary election day for 15 states (though only Democrats will vote in Utah today). It’s also neighborhood caucus night, when Utah Republicans and Democrats pick their delegates: the people who choose the party’s local and statewide candidates at convention. Want in on the action? Show up at your precinct and help choose delegates, or become a delegate yourself. Registered Democrats and Republicans can find their precincts online. Utah teenagers are even participating in caucus boot camps. [SLCo Clerk, Utah GOP, Utah Dems, KUER]
What Lawmakers Did
Utah’s 2024 legislative session is over. Since January, state senators and representatives have passed 591 bills and a $29 billion budget. It’s a lot! So we are breaking down how it all impacts your life with Fox 13 Reporter Ben Winslow. Part one includes: two new stadiums downtown, the Great Salt Lake, and calendars. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

What Lawmakers Did About SLC Stadiums, Great Salt Lake, and Calendars

Fox 13 reporter Ben Winslow joins host Ali Vallarta to break down where the MLB and NHL stadium bills landed, what legislators did for the Great Salt Lake, and how they made their day-to-day actions more opaque to the public.

Just in case you needed a reminder: You’re doing great.
