What's CITY Talking About?

An Update on the MLB Stadium

The Utah Legislature approved a bill that would provide over $900 million in state funds for a Major League Baseball stadium (assuming Utah lands an MLB team) in the Fairpark and surrounding neighborhoods. The Larry H. Miller Company already said it would invest $3.5 billion in redeveloping the area. [KSL, City Cast Salt Lake]

Utah’s Trespassing Laws

In a viral video, a snowboarder was confronted by a property owner wielding a shotgun in Brighton. The snowboarder, Loren Richardson, said he unknowingly trespassed onto the property owner’s driveway, which led to the tense exchange. According to Utah law, someone is allowed to defend their property with force if they believe they are in danger. But a brandishing statute prevents the use of a firearm to threaten in an argument or quarrel (although possessing it is not illegal). [KSL]

The Olympics Bid Is In

Utah has officially submitted a 5,000-page bid to host the 2034 Winter Olympics. The paperwork includes detailed plans and host-city guarantees to the International Olympic Committee. Last November, the IOC selected Salt Lake City as their preferred host of the 2034 games. [Salt Lake Tribune]
