SLC restaurants that are gone but not forgotten
February 22, 2024
Good morning! A Hey Salt Lake reader asked, “I’m looking for recommendations for craft nights for adults to do with some parent friends. We’re all over-scheduled on weeknights and burned out, so ideally something for adults only on Friday or Saturday nights that’s wonderfully mindless and gives us a chance to chill and connect.”

What's CITY Talking About?
The Whale 2.0?
The Fairpark neighborhood is set to get a new art installation at the traffic circle of 1300 W. and 500 N. It’s a smaller plot so it won’t be as large as the whale, but who knows, maybe we’ll see a baby whale? What do you want to see there? [Salt Lake Tribune]
UTA ReConnect
The Utah Transit Authority offers a free transportation alternative to passengers when there’s delays or service interruptions through a program called UTA ReConnect. Say there’s a mechanical issue on the TRAX line? Call customer service and they may be able to get you a coupon code for a free Uber, Lyft, or cab ride — or connect you to another bus. The phone line is currently open from 6 a.m.- 9 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 8:30 a.m- 5 p.m. Sunday, but they’re looking to expand hours. [Salt Lake Tribune]
Natalie Cline Seeking Reelection
On Monday, Natalie Cline announced that she’s running for re-election for Utah State Board of Education. This decision comes shortly after she was censured by the Utah Legislature for a social media post where she bullied a high school athlete. [KSL]
In Loving Memory of SLC Establishments
It feels like every day we see a familiar building getting demolished, or get word that a well-established local joint is up for sale. Change is hard and it’s important to take time to mourn! So today, the entire City Cast Salt Lake team gathered to hold a funeral service for the restaurants, buildings, and watering holes left in the construction dust. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Salt Lake Chatter
Hey Salt Lake readers are walking down memory lane and running in groups around Utah.
🎶 On Nostalgic Elementary Songs
“Fifty Nifty United States compliments of Oakdale Elementary School in Sandy. Still know all lyrics including the name of all 50 states in alphabetical order. And I’m 50. It sounds nuts but having that recall has come in handy countless times!” — Jen C.
“In fifth grade, we did a musical program about the Constitution. I was a FEATURED VOCALIST on this song. The lyrics will be burned into my brain forevermore.” — City Cast Salt Lake executive producer Emily Means
“Westland Elementary in West Jordan. When you learned all 50 states in a very sing-song voice Alabama, Alaska, Arizona … etc. and we would always yell UTAH and raise our arms. I can still sing it over 40 years later!” — Penny P.
👟 On Salt Lake Running Clubs
“I loved yesterday’s episode about running & thought maybe listeners might like info on local running groups:
SLC Track Club hosts four runs every week including a speed workout, a trail run, & a long road run.
Women of the Wasatch & Trail Sisters are both trail running groups for women. They each have “no-drop” runs so they’re perfect for women looking to try out trail running.
The Flying Irish is a fun crew that meets once a week. You’ll find them every Thursday at 6 p.m. at Craft by Proper, where they go for a short run & then reconvene at Craft for drinks!
Wasatch Trails Collective is a group for runners of color in the Salt Lake area.
SLC Running Club meets every Wednesday at various locations around the city, usually the Capitol or Liberty Park.”

A Funeral For Salt Lake’s Late Restaurants
From Holladay to downtown Salt Lake City, we’re getting used to seeing our favorite haunts toppled by a wrecking ball, listed for sale, or mysteriously shuttered. Which is why the entire City Cast Salt Lake team — newsletter editor Terina Ria, host Ali Vallarta, producer Ivana Martinez, and executive producer Emily Means — have gathered in a conference room to eulogize the iconic institutions left behind in the construction dust.
