🌱 The flora & fauna of Liberty Park
February 13, 2024
Good morning! This is your sign to get outside and go for a walk. We’ve got a guide to some of the flora and fauna you can spot in Liberty Park.

What's CITY Talking About?
WinCo Employees Unionizing
Employees at WinCo Foods in South Salt Lake voted to unionize, though the store is already somewhat employee-owned. Employees get partial ownership if they’ve worked 500 hours in the first six months, but turnover has been high due to a challenging work environment, low wages, inconsistent hours, and a strict absence policy. Employees hope the Teamsters union will help them negotiate better conditions. [Salt Lake Tribune]
SLC’s Co-Living Apartments
Salt Lake City’s first post-college, co-living, co-working apartment project, Salt Lake Crossing, is now pre-leasing. It consists of 300 units — half are 228 square-foot micro studios with a private bathroom and kitchenette, starting at $1,300 a month. There will be 30 studios to a floor with access to a communal gourmet kitchen, family room, and dining room. The other half will be 470 square-foot “open one-bedrooms” (essentially a studio) with full kitchens starting at $1,650. Amenities include regular social programming. [Building Salt Lake]
Utah Soccer Player Makes History
Utahn Laveni Vaka is making history as the first Tongan woman to play professional soccer. Laveni was picked by Bay FC in the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League draft. Vaka previously played for Juan Diego and Brigham Young University. [FOX 13]

More Sports Talk
Utah billionaires and state leaders are courting the NHL and MLB. And now Daybreak could get the Oakland A's while the team awaits a new baseball stadium on the Las Vegas strip. So, should Salt Lake be saying hallelujah or hell no? City Cast Salt Lake podcast host Ali Vallarta talks to our colleagues at City Cast Las Vegas about it. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Should SLC Copy Las Vegas’ Sports Model?
If local billionaires get their way, Utah could soon become home to even more professional sports teams. Ryan Smith is bidding for a National Hockey League team, and Gail Miller is trying to recruit Major League Baseball — including the Oakland Athletics, while they wait for their Las Vegas stadium to open. Host Ali Vallarta asks City Cast Las Vegas host Dayvid Figler how becoming a sports city has and hasn’t penciled out for the community.
One, two, three strikes we’re out.
