What's CITY Talking About?
Bears Ears
Utah has pulled out of negotiations over a Bears Ears National Monument land exchange, citing the federal government's lack of “good faith.” Gov. Spencer Cox and other legislative leaders said that Congress failed to ratify an agreement made nearly a year ago, and that federal restrictions would harm public land uses. They ended by saying they’re open to chatting again but only with genuine collaboration from the federal side. [Deseret News]
Greatest Snow on Earth
Did you ever wonder why Utah has “The Greatest Snow on Earth?” The term was initially coined by Salt Lake Tribune editor Tom Korologos in 1960. Later, scientists were able to prove it with weather forecasting technology. What makes our snow so great is its lower water content and the pattern in which it falls. Basically, it allows for the fluffy snow to stay on top which is ideal for skiers and snowboarders. [Salt Lake Magazine]
Train to Boise/Vegas
The Utah Department of Transportation says it plans to reapply for a grant to study a rail corridor between Utah, Idaho, and Nevada after Idaho’s application error caused an initial denial. Reportedly, the Idaho Transportation Department accidentally sent the application to the incorrect grant program. Although, it wasn’t officially confirmed why Utah was denied funding. [KSL]
