How to hobby in Salt Lake

January 29, 2024

Hey, Salt Lake! Can you believe January is just about over? What are you looking forward to most next month?

What's CITY Talking About?

More Flights in SLC

Frontier Airlines will increase their Salt Lake City service starting in April, including non-stop flights to San Francisco, Ontario (California), and Dallas-Fort Worth. Better yet, the inaugural flights will have $19 promotional fares while supplies last! [KSL]

NBA All-Star Game Autopsy

Temple University conducted an NBA-commissioned economic impact report of the NBA All-Star Games that were hosted in Salt Lake City last year. It’s estimated that the event brought in jobs, media coverage, and $294 million, but that doesn’t account for inflated numbers and indirect sales from that weekend. [Salt Lake Tribune 🔒]

Protect the Pygmy Rabbit

Due to declining numbers in the west, including Utah, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is considering federal protections for the world’s smallest rabbit — the pygmy rabbit. It’s been threatened by habitat loss, livestock grazing, and industrial development but may receive Endangered Species protections after a petition was signed by environmental groups. [Deseret News]

State of Salt Lake City

Tomorrow, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall will give her annual state of the city address. She is newly re-elected and this is the start of her second term. So, what’s on the mayor’s mind as she looks to the future? City Cast Salt Lake host Ali Vallarta asked her how she’s thinking about some of our city’s biggest projects. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Where Is It?

Joe Hill mural. (Ivana Martinez/City Cast Salt Lake)

The last edition of “Where Is It?” featured the Joe Hill mural on the side of the old Ken Sanders Rare Books at 268 S. 200 E. in Salt Lake City. Here’s what Hey Salt Lake readers had to say about it:

“Found it by accident while exploring my new home city after UTA orientation! Moments later, I got an emergency squall alert and scurried away to the nearest TRAX car back to Sugar House. Great to see my new employer ready, even in some wild weather!” — Signed, one of the newest TRAX operators in training, Topher

“The mural is on Ken Sanders Rare Books store, which is going to be torn down with me on it! JK (kinda).” — Abbie S.

By the way, visit the new Ken Sanders Rare Books location, underground at The Leonardo.

Thanks to Brigham Young, who gave us six-ox-cart, U-turn-wide streets in our downtown … We don't need that on every single city street.
