Understanding Utah's Legislative session
January 16, 2024
Hey, Salt Lake! Gird your loins, it’s day one of the 2024 Utah legislative session. We’re sharing some info on what to expect below. Plus, cute animals!

What's CITY Talking About?
The Miller’s Want Major League Sports
Last year, Utah billionaire Gail Miller announced plans to bring Major League Baseball to Salt Lake City. And the Larry H. Miller Company recently acquired 12 acres of land near the proposed stadium location. The purchase is another sign of Miller’s determination to bring more professional sports to Utah (she previously owned the Utah Jazz). [Building Salt Lake]

Childcare Legislation
Senate Minority Leader Luz Escamilla is proposing a bill that will repurpose unused space in state office buildings into childcare facilities for state employees and community members. Both political parties in the legislature agree that Utah’s childcare crisis needs to be addressed. [FOX 13]

Orem Cheesecake Factory
Utah County is getting its first Cheesecake Factory, with a projected opening the first week of February. Be prepared to wait in very long lines for your fried macaroni balls. My favorite TikTok menu hack? Order the chicken Caesar salad, substitute with Louisiana-style chicken, and add caramelized onions. [KSL]
Day 1 of 45
Today is the first day of Utah’s legislative session, which means senators and representatives from around the state will spend the next 45 days up at the capitol making laws, passing a budget, and reading our angry emails. So, what’s on the agenda? And, should Salt Lakers be expecting any surprises? [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
