🚧 New year, new construction

December 21, 2023

Hey, Salt Lake! Do you estate sale, bro? As someone who is easily overwhelmed by simply thrifting, attending an estate sale seems like … a lot. If you’re an expert in the field, send me your tips! (i.e. How do you find them? Do you haggle? How do you even haggle?)

What's CITY Talking About?

Cottonwood Connect Ski Shuttle

The Cottonwood Connect Ski Shuttle is back for a second season. You can reserve your seat on the shuttle (which fits 25) for $10 one way or $20 round trip. It helps bridge the service gap when the Utah Transit Authority ski bus is at capacity. [KUER]

'Gwyneth Goes Skiing' in London

ICYMI, the Park City ski trial between actor Gwyneth Paltrow and Utahn Terry Sanderson is now a London musical called “Gwyneth Goes Skiing.” At times, the real life trial seemed like a staged production itself. Remember when the attorney asked Gwyneth, “Are you friends with Taylor Swift?” The musical may never make it stateside, but there’s nothing like the real thing. [Park Record]

New Year, New Construction

The 300 W. construction project, the largest in Salt Lake City history, wrapped up this year. But next year, 2100 S. in Sugar House is getting a brand new look. The reason construction often takes so long is a rigamarole that includes the proposal, the design process, unexpected delays, and overlapping private construction. [Salt Lake Tribune 🔒]

Getting Cuffed Up for the Season

“Cuffing season” is a nickname for the time of year when single Salt Lakers try to lock down a steady winter fling. It’s cold out there, and you need someone to hold the popcorn while you take off your coat at the movies. So here are some do’s and don’ts, date ideas, and a little advice from host Ali Vallarta and producer Ivana Martinez. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

(Natural) wine and dine ‘em. (@florafaunawines/Instagram)

Hey Salt Lake readers are chatting about natural wine, holiday films, and rapping Attorneys General. You know, all of the important things in life.

🍷 On Organic/Natural Wine

“Quick note on ‘organic’ wines, I used to work for a winery for over 15 years in CA before moving here. So many wines are likely ‘organic’ but to certify your wines that way is so much extra $$$$. It’s better to do a deep dive into wines and research them one by one.” — Mary M.

“Tea Zaanti in Sugar House hosts natural wine nights often!” — Elliot R.

🎥 On Holiday Movies

“Omg, you’re spreading the good news of ‘The Mistletones!’ My work on this earth is now complete. I was actually going to take the fam on a little hot-chocolate fueled, terribly soundtracked tour of the locations.” — Heather R.

“‘Jingle All the Way’ is the single greatest film of all time, regardless of genre.” — Eric N.

🎤 On Rapping Reyes

“With all the recent coverage of AG Sean Reyes, I am surprised to see no one has resurfaced his persona as ‘The Rapping Republican.’ It's no ‘Fresh Printz of Bills Here’ or ‘Linda Paulson 4 District 12.’ But given the intense focus on how he has conducted himself while serving as AG, it seems worth a mention.” — Kate B.

🔮 On 2024 Predictions

“I am betting that UDOT will eventually lose against the numerous Little Cottonwood Canyon gondola-related lawsuits! Even after an initial ruling is appealed by the defendants.” — Olivia J.
