What's CITY Talking About?
Election Results
City Cast Salt Lake producer Emily Means here with some preliminary results from last night’s election. With ranked choice voting for municipal races in Salt Lake City and elsewhere, there’s a little uncertainty over how long it’ll take to name winners. So, here’s what we know as of 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Find updated results here.
🗳️Congressional District 2
Say hello to Utah’s new Congressional representative: Republican Celeste Maloy. Maloy raked in 58% of the vote over Democrat Kathleen Riebe’s 34%. Maloy replaces former Rep. Chris Stewart, who resigned earlier this year. The district stretches down the west side of the state, from Davis County all the way to St. George and includes much of Salt Lake City.
🗳️Salt Lake City Mayor
No official winner in this race quite yet, but incumbent Erin Mendenhall appears to have won reelection to a second term. Early returns put her ahead of challengers Rocky Anderson and Michael Valentine by a big margin — 59% of the vote — during the first round of ranked choice voting. And while “not a formal concession,” Anderson told the Salt Lake Tribune he thinks “it would take a minor miracle for this to turn around right now.”
🗳️Salt Lake City Council
Similar to the mayor’s race, the results for Districts 4, 6, and 7 are in limbo. Here’s what we know so far:
- District 2 (West Side): Current Councilmember Ale Puy ran unopposed — so he won.
- District 4 (Downtown): Eva López Chávez, a community organizer and former city employee, leads incumbent Ana Valdemoros.
- District 6 (East Bench): Incumbent Dan Dugan leads challenger Taymour Semnani.
- District 7 (Sugar House): Incumbent Sarah Young leads challenger Molly Jones.
School Closures
Salt Lake City School District Superintendent Elizabeth Grant is recommending four elementary schools for closure next year: Hawthorne, Bennion, Mary W. Jackson, and Riley elementaries. For months, the district has been studying seven schools for closure due to a decline in student population and other factors. But their closure isn’t a foregone conclusion. Community members can share their questions, comments, and concerns at a public hearing scheduled for 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 5 at West High School. [Salt Lake Tribune]
