Making the case for strip malls

November 15, 2023

Hey, Salt Lake! In today’s newsletter we’ve got a guide to Foothill, wherein I share the allure of strip malls.

What's CITY Talking About?

No Bars in Rose Park & Fairpark

There are no bars in Rose Park or Fairpark, and it’s not because of licensing issues. City leaders say it’s because of the west side’s deep history with redlining that has resulted in a lack of amenities. In the past, this racist housing practice was used to keep people of color segregated. West side community members have long expressed a desire for third spaces, and new developments on the horizon (like the new baseball stadium and Folsom trail corridor) hint that a bar may be in the district’s future. Pollution on the West Side

Another detrimental effect of redlining on the west side is severe air pollution. A study by the University of Utah linked elevated air pollution to a 16% higher risk of losing a pregnancy. Looming projects like the Utah Inland Port and I-15 expansion raise persistent concerns about their long-term impact on the health of west side residents. [KUER]

A Mayoral Analysis

God help us, we are still in the SLC mayoral election. And with the debates in the rearview mirror, we offer a little analysis. A vision for our city can be hard to lay in a soundbite, so who are those soundbites for? And do they change minds? [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Today on City Cast

Who you choose in this mayoral race comes down to what you believe the role of Salt Lake City's mayor is in the context of our Republican legislature and our Republican-led state. That's my central thesis.

The campaign season for Salt Lake City mayor has felt longer than it had any right to be, including about a dozen debates between the three candidates.
