Is SLC Olympics 2034 a sure thing?

November 14, 2023

Hey, Salt Lake! Terina is out today. I’m City Cast Salt Lake podcast host Ali Vallarta subbing in with an abbreviated newsletter.

We are working on an episode of cheap, easy ideas for kids’ birthday parties (ages 5-12). I’m grateful for your suggestions, and we just might read them on the show.

What's CITY Talking About?

Did Utah’s AG Misuse Campaign Funds?

Utah’s Attorney General Sean Reyes is having the #worstyearever. First, his longtime friend and associate Tim Ballard faces sexual harassment and corruption charges. Then, Reyes is accused of witness tampering and intimidation in that investigation. Now, it’s being reported that the AG has spent campaign funds on everything from a $46,752 hog hunting trip to a Ritz-Carlton stay in Portugal. [Salt Lake Tribune 🔒]

Did Love Save Deadpan Sandwich Shop?

Good sandwiches are too hard to come by in Salt Lake, and residents were devastated to learn that Deadpan Sandwich Shop in the Woodbine Food Hall was set to close for good on Nov. 11. But on closing day, the business shared an Instagram post announcing a reopening date, due in part to the “outpouring of love and support” from the community. We did it! [Instagram]

Is Salt Lake’s Olympic Bid A Sure Thing?

Salt Lake City is now the only bidder for the 2034 Olympic games, which has some enthusiasts saying it’s locked up. But, do we have the capacity to host the world here? Do we have the water? Four-time Olympian and the chair of Salt Lake’s Olympic Committee, Catherine Raney-Norman, tried to change my mind. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Should Salt Lake Be Hosting the 2034 Olympics?

Utah is now the only bidder for the 2034 Winter Olympics, which has some news outlets reporting that it’s almost certain Salt Lake City will be awarded the games (again). But not all SLC residents are convinced we need a do-over — including host Ali Vallarta. Catherine Raney-Norman, a four-time Olympian and chair of the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games, makes her case for bringing the Olympic dream back to our city.

Have a great day,
