What's the deal with ranked choice voting?
November 6, 2023
Good morning! A Hey Salt Lake reader asks, “We have a young teenager and are looking for things for him to do in winter that are non-sport and non-snow. He’s a bit of a bookworm/gamer, but I would love to find things for him outside the house.”

What's CITY Talking About?
Temporary Shelter
Last week, pods arrived at the site of Salt Lake City’s temporary shelter community. There will be 50 housing pods total, each with its own heating, air conditioning, and electrical outlets. You can find more updates on the project on Salt Lake City’s website. [X]

School Closures
Salt Lake City School District won't be laying off staff if schools close due to declining population. That's according to Superintendent Elizabeth Grant, who recently sent an email to staff to address concerns over school closures. She noted that if the population and boundary study resulted in a school’s closure, all faculty and staff of the impacted school would be “offered equivalent employment opportunities within the district." Ski Bus
It could be just a few weeks before the resorts open for winter. And whether or not you ski or snowboard, we all know the season brings terrible canyon traffic. Or, as Utahns like to call it, the red snake. So what can we expect from the ski bus this year? And what does that mean for taxpayers who don’t ride it — or don’t want to fund the gondola? Where Is It?

Shout out to Kate R. and Shannon S. for correctly guessing last week’s “Where Is It?” This is a portrait of Jedediah M. Grant, Salt Lake City’s first mayor, in the City and County Building.

Will the Ski Bus Suck Less This Winter?
This past winter, ski bus service up Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons really sucked. With opening day at the resorts fast approaching, what can winter recreators expect this season? Russ Fox, director of planning at the Utah Transit Authority, joins host Ali Vallarta to talk about improvements, so you’re (hopefully) not left waiting at a bus stop in a blizzard.
This song has been popping up on my social media algorithm and I 😭😩 every time. What song do you listen to when you need a good cry? Should we make a Hey Salt Lake crying playlist?
