Who's running for Salt Lake City Council?
October 23, 2023

Good morning! Have you seen this? A man from Park City in 1923 dreamed what living in 2023 would be like and, honestly, he’s not too far off.

What's CITY Talking About?
Parking Fines in the Cottonwoods
Winter is coming. If you’re driving up the canyons, be aware that parking violations will increase starting Nov. 1 from $25 to a range of $75-$150. Don’t park outside the white lines, follow the “No Parking” signs, and steer clear of avalanche-prone zones. [Instagram]

Weapon Detectors Facing Federal Investigation
Last week, we shared a story about new weapon detectors in four Salt Lake City high schools. Now, Evolv, the company that makes the machines, is under a federal investigation that alleges the detectors are not as effective as they claim. The Salt Lake City School District board already approved a $1.56 million, four-year lease of the machines. [KSL]
SLC’s Temporary Shelter Community
In September, city and state officials gathered downtown to make a big announcement: Salt Lake City is getting its first sanctioned homelessness camp, on 300 S. and 600 W. There are a lot of details to iron out, but our city council is looking to Denver’s sanctioned camping program for inspiration. So today we take a peek at Denver’s program, so we may know what to anticipate. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Today on City Cast
What we found is nearly half of the people who are staying in encampments wind up back on the streets at some point. Now, there are two ways you can look at that number. One is: That's horrifying. The other way of looking at the number is: Wow! You know, roughly half of people are actually moving toward permanent housing.
What Can SLC Learn From Denver’s Sanctioned Camps?
In September, Salt Lake City and state officials announced the site of the state’s first-ever sanctioned homeless camp, 300 S. and 600 W. in downtown SLC. And one city council member has said they’re looking to Denver’s sanctioned camping program for inspiration. Host Ali Vallarta asks Denverite homelessness reporter Kyle Harris what lessons Salt Lake can learn from Colorado, and the successes and challenges we should come to expect.
