Salt Lake as croissants
October 12, 2023
Hey, Salt Lake! Asking for myself: How do you stop doom scrolling? I want to spend way less time on my phone but it’s very hard. What’s the one thing that encourages you to put down your phone? Is it your favorite hobby or spending time outdoors? Tell me about it!

What's CITY Talking About?
Avian Flu
Avian flu is killing turkeys at a Sanpete County farm. Almost 150,000 turkeys died or had to be killed in order to control the highly pathogenic disease. It’s too early to tell if this will impact turkey sales for the upcoming holidays. [FOX 13]
Neighborhood Croissants
The pastry chef behind Forty Three Bakery, Andrew Corrao, is showing his love of Salt Lake through croissants. Each month, he offers a specialty croissant inspired by a different city or neighborhood in Salt Lake County. October is Riverton, filled with pumpkin pastry cream and topped with maple buttercream and spiced pecans. In past months he’s done Draper with Ikea Lingonberry jam, and Rose Park with raspberry and rose jam. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Salt Lake Chatter
We covered a range of topics in the last few weeks. From a new Trader Joe’s to the best soft pretzels, here’s what Hey Salt Lake readers had to say.
On SLC Getting Another Trader Joe’s
“What about us here in Tooele? Huh? I know. Wishful thinking. If we could just get an Asian grocery store so that I don’t have to drive 35-50 miles, that’d be great.” — Brooke B.
On The Other Place Restaurant
“Although their food is still delicious, the ambience of the restaurant when it was in the old house next door was special. I miss that atmosphere. Do you know how the restaurant got its name? The bar on the corner was The Place and the restaurant was The Other Place. Down the road was X-Wife's Place. All owned by the same guy.” — Pat B.
On The Hoberman Arch
“I honestly don't have an opinion either way, but here's what I propose: Let's keep the Hoberman Arch and get rid of that freaking monstrosity at the Living Planet Aquarium.” — Andrea S.
On The Best Pretzels
“Blatch's BBQ has an amazing fire roasted pretzel! “— Michelle M.
“Bohemian Brewery has the best soft pretzel/beer cheese combo, hands down!” — Stephen H.

An Astronomer’s Guide to the Annular Eclipse
Are you ready for the annular eclipse? On Saturday, Oct. 14, the sun will appear in the sky like a “ring of fire,” and southern Utah will be right in its path. The cosmic event will surely draw huge crowds, and Torrey Mayor Mickey Wright says his town is gearing up for a massive wave of visitors. Mayor Wright — who is also an astronomer — joins host Ali Vallarta to give us an astronomy lesson and share tips for safely enjoying the eclipse.
Quick correction: In our recent segment about the annular eclipse, we said Salt Lake City was the prime viewing spot for the "ring of fire." The best view is actually in Southern Utah. Enjoy the eclipse!
