How do you romanticize your Salt Lake life?

September 7, 2023

Good morning! I was on the City Cast Salt Lake podcast to talk about how I like to romanticize my life in this city (spoiler: it includes food). What are some little things that bring you joy?

What's CITY Talking About?

More Dogs Than Kids

There are more dogs than children in Salt Lake City households, according to a survey for the Salt Lake City Department of Public Lands. The data is from 2017 and helps the city plan better for public spaces — think dog parks, of which Salt Lake City currently has 11. Meanwhile, Utah’s birth rate has declined. Research from the University of Utah shows we have dropped from first in the nation to fourth in number of births. [FOX 13]

Maloy’s Slight Lead

As of Wednesday morning, Celeste Maloy has a small lead over Becky Edwards in the Republican primary for  Utah’s 2nd Congressional District seat. The winner of the primary will move on to the special general election in November to replace Rep. Chris Stewart, who resigned earlier this year due to his wife’s health concerns. [KUER]

Romanticizing Our SLC Lives

It’s good to focus on the simple pleasures our town has to offer. On the City Cast Salt Lake podcast, I join lead producer Emily Means and producer Ivana Martinez to talk about how we romanticize our Salt Lake City lives. Welcome to our TED Talk. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

The Sconecutter, gone but not forgotten. (@slsees/Instagram)

This week in Hey Salt Lake reader comments, you talk about the closed restaurants you miss the most (RIP) and first concerts.

😢 On Closed Food Establishments

“I miss Sconecutter so much, what a yummy fast food place. Are you kidding? Scrambled egg and cheese scone sammy? Cinnamon sugar scone? Weird smiley face fries? And it was eight times better in the middle of the night. The few deserted Sconecutter buildings around still haunt and torture me.” — Annee B.

“I am going to age myself here, these two have been gone for ages but Brannigan’s ice cream for the most memorable turtle sundae and tasty grilled cheese sandwich. Another was PoFolks, they had a chicken noodle soup that is burned forever in my childhood memory.  Not to mention my late grandmother laughing her head off when her drink was served in a mason jar.” — Jen C.

“I really wish European connection would be one to come back!! I really loved that place! Almost every week I would go to the location in Sugarhouse and get the crepe with chicken, sprouts, ranch and cheese mixed in, and it was so mesmerizing watching them make the crepes on the big griddle and then adding your choices on top of it as it cooked. And the fact that they had sweet ones as well was even better! The crepe with peaches was my favorite! Really hope that one day someone might decide to bring this back to Utah! I’d be there in a heartbeat!” — Heather H.

🎤 On First (Britney Spears) Concerts

“Britney Spears, Oops, I Did It Again tour at the Delta Center, second grade. Had to leave early because my friend Hayley had an asthma attack.” — Anonymous

“My friend Lauren and I were seven when we saw Britney Spears at the Delta Center! It was too loud for us in the arena, so Lauren's mom, Mary, took us out into the hallway to listen.” — Anonymous
