🍷 Will we finally get wine in grocery stores?
August 3, 2023
Hey, Salt Lake! Let’s vent. Last week, we talked about perfect SLC, but what’s your biggest gripe about our city? I feel like I’ll never stop complaining about our capital “T” TERRIBLE drivers (please stop tailgating me, I have anxiety). Send me an email, haters.

What's CITY Talking About?
Wine & Liquor in Grocery Stores?
A group of citizens filed a ballot initiative to sell wine and spirits in grocery and convenience stores. But will it pass? First, the initiative sponsors must collect more than 134,000 signatures. But they have some formidable opponents in the Republican supermajority Legislature and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The Church with its mega ($$$) political influence has opposed similar efforts to loosen state liquor laws in the past. [FOX 13]
Power Outage in Salt Lake
Were you one of the 12,000 who lost power Tuesday night? A crane knocked down several power lines in Sugar House, causing an outage that lasted several hours. Emergency crews were on the scene at 2100 S. and 900 E. and were able to get power back up by 11 p.m. [KSL]
Mum’s the Word on Winter Overflow Shelters
On Tuesday, Salt Lake County government officials submitted their homeless shelter overflow plan for the winter. Millcreek Mayor Jeff Silvestrini confirmed they hope to have 600 overflow beds as well as 200 more beds for “code blue” nights (when temps are 15 degrees or below). That’s more than the 340 overflow beds last year. Still, it’s not confirmed where they will be located nor if they’ll receive the needed funding. [KUER]

Salt Lake Chatter

This week in Hey Salt Lake reader comments you tell us about the best ice cream and your perfect SLC. Plus, you’re not convinced that Denver is our rival city.
🍦 On Ice Cream
“I’m an avid ice cream eater AND from the south where we have Blue Bell (God's gift to earth). Rockwell and Monkeywrench are my top picks. I was shocked that Monkeywrench was vegan. It definitely doesn’t taste like it. I also just discovered Rawbean’s ice cream/espresso milkshake. Perfect for a hot day.” — Thomas E.
🙌 On Perfect SLC
“I love seeing Project Rainbow’s flags all over the city during pride month and Transgender Remembrance Day. I love Miss Betty who works at Emigration Market for her dry sense of humor. I love walking my dog at the Bonneville golf course in the winter and trying to catch a glimpse of the fox who lives on the golf course (pick up your poop dog owners!). I love Hires Big H’s diet cokes with crushed ice. I love Utah Jazz Summer League. We are so lucky to host a summer league and it’s because Utah Jazz fans are die-hard basketball fans. And I love this email I get from City Cast every day!” — Kate R.
🥊 On Rival Cities
“I was born and raised in Denver in the 80's and 90's (in the Highlands neighborhood before it was gentrified and called that) and have called SLC home for 12 years. SLC is waaay better than Denver. But I think our rival city should be Portland! The Salt Lake underground scenes are what people think Portland is about.” — Justice M.
“I will make the claim that Boise is actually our rival city. I have lived in all three places so I like to think I can stake a claim in this debate. Denver is actually more like Chicago and the Midwest than the West. Another argument is the predominant religion and its impact on government, politics, and so many other issues creates more similarities than differences making us better comparisons, and thus, rivals. Boise and SLC also share a similar comfort level that allows people to leave and come back.” — Eric S.
