Good morning! Big shout out to all those who attended our 801 celebration. Y’all are the best part of Hey Salt Lake, and it was lovely to get to chat with so many of you. Speaking of 801, due to some technical difficulties, our explainer on how we ended up with our beloved area code didn’t make it into yesterday’s newsletter. But don’t worry: You can check it out on our website.

What's CITY Talking About?

Why These SLC Schools Are at Risk of Closing

Salt Lake City School District’s board is considering shutting down seven elementary schools: Emerson, Bennion, Mary W. Jackson, Hawthorne, Riley, Wasatch, and Newman. Since 2014, the district has seen a 29% drop in enrollment. But enrollment is only one of 12 factors being considered. Schools are scored in four categories — safe, reasonable, simple, and cost-effective — with a number of criteria under each. [Salt Lake Tribune]

Help Design Draper’s Focal Point

Developers of The Point in Draper are asking Utahns to help design a distinct landmark, like the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Statue of Liberty in New York City, and the whale of Salt Lake City. The Point will be at the site of the old state prison. Their aim is to make a highly walkable community that has everything within a 15-minute walk. Take the survey to submit your idea for the new development’s “focal point.”  [KSL]

It’s Getting Hot in Here

July was the earth’s hottest month ever recorded, and in Salt Lake we broke a few heat records of our own. Salt Lake County establishes public cooling centers in the summer. But what’s the best way to get the word out? City Cast Salt Lake lead producer Emily Means talked with Ron, who’s been homeless on and off in Salt Lake for years. Plus, host Ali Vallarta chats with Wendy Garvin of Unsheltered Utah for a list of ways we can all pitch in. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
