July 31, 2023
Hey, Salt Lake! While our city isn’t perfect by any means, there’s a lot that makes it special. I outline my favorite things below. Plus, the best chicken tenders 🤤

What's CITY Talking About?
Do You Have a Beehive?
Salt Lake County is offering free bee inspections for people with beehives. They’ll check for pests or maladies that could harm your honey bee population. To schedule an appointment, call Peter Somers at 801-874-2999 or send an email. [Instagram]
Midvale Hospital Banned From Taking Patients
Highland Ridge Hospital in Midvale has been banned from taking patients for the third time. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services revoked the psychiatric facility’s license and issued a conditional license due to a report of a patient not receiving proper medication. Additionally, there have been reports of patient sexual assault by employees. The DHHS has received backlash for not permanently closing the facility after repeat offenses. [FOX 13]
Childcare Shortage
We’ve got a math problem here in Utah: 154,000 kids have working parents. But there are only 55,000 childcare slots. So how are local businesses stepping up to watch 99,000 kids? On today’s episode of City Cast Salt Lake, host Ali Vallarta talks with Utah Business editor Mekenna Malan to do the calculus. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Just How Bad Is Utah’s Childcare Crisis?
Utah’s childcare gap is approximately 99,000 kids, which leaves a lot of working parents (mothers) holding the bag. So, while we wait for legislative action, how are local businesses stepping up to keep parents at work? Utah Business editor Mekenna Malan joins host Ali Vallarta to analyze the options.
Happy Monday!
