Explained: The Jimmy John's black ice cream cone
July 17, 2023
Happy Monday! Today we’re talking SLC relics hidden in plain sight. Plus, an aquatic “Where is it?”

What's CITY Talking About?
New SLC Councilmember
The Salt Lake City Council appointed Sarah Young to fill the vacant District 7 seat that was previously held by Amy Fowler. Fowler stepped down after a May 3 arrest for suspicion of DUI. Young is chief of staff for the Utah State Board of Education. [Salt Lake Tribune]
Senior Dog Sanctuary
Therapaws Senior Sanctuary is a nonprofit that rescues senior dogs from animal shelters. The dogs go to assisted living facilities around Salt Lake to bring some joy to the residents there. Research shows that pet therapy can help with depression, anxiety, and even cardiovascular problems. [FOX 13]
Every Bar in Salt Lake
In the face of Utah’s strict liquor laws, the experience of drinking in this city is already a journey. So in January of this year, City Cast Salt Lake host Ali Vallarta made it a quest. Her New Year’s resolution was to have at least one drink at every bar in Salt Lake County before the end of 2023. Lead producer Emily Means checks in with her to see how the journey is coming along. Where Is It?

Snelgrove, the ice cream store and factory was around for 50 years before being demolished, but the sign still stands today in Sugar House around 800 E and 2100 S. Shoutout to everyone who guessed it right!
Hey Salt Lake reader Becky H said, “We lived behind Snelgrove on Elm Ave. for 20 years. My favorite order was caramel cashew malt with extra marshmallow topping. It was so sweet and I loved it but now the thought seems really sickening. Mr. Snelgrove planted a garden next to the south fence and my husband would take his tractor over and plow the ground each spring. Great memories.”
What will become of the cone? Like many demolished buildings in the area, the site will house a new apartment/retail development, but the Snelgrove sign and ice cream cone will stay.

For this week’s “Where Is It?” can you name that pool? Hint: It’s in Ogden.

Why You Should Get a Drink at a Salt Lake Strip Club
In January, host Ali Vallarta announced her New Year’s resolution was to have at least one drink at every bar in Salt Lake County before the end of 2023. Some called her crazy, some tried to call her bluff, but today — as she reaches the halfway point — lead producer Emilly Means is calling her in for the gossip on where and when to have the most fun at Salt Lake bars.
See ya.
