Millcreek's giant day of service

July 13, 2023

Good morning! Hey Salt Lake reader Erica B. asks, “The newsletter with recs for best bread spots made me first drool and then wonder if readers have favorite gluten-free spots. I know Good Food Bakery makes sourdough, but it's not my favorite. Is there a delicious loaf of artisan GF bread hiding out there somewhere? Good spots for GF treats are also always good to know about!”

Can you help a gluten-intolerant friend out? Send me an email.

What's CITY Talking About?

The Gondola Is a Go

Despite public backlash, the Utah Department of Transportation will move forward with the controversial gondola proposal for Little Cottonwood Canyon. The plan will include enhanced bus services and a 2,500 stall parking terrace at the base of the canyon, but that won’t happen for years and would be contingent upon funds from the Utah Legislature. Heat Wave

It’s going to be a scorcher this weekend, especially in southern Utah. The National Weather Service warns of dangerously hot temperatures with a forecast of 115 in St. George on Saturday. Salt Lake could reach the low 100s on Sunday. [Salt Lake Tribune]

What To Do if You Meet a Mountain Lion

It’s hiking season, which means our odds of encountering predators on the trail are increased. Remember when two women fought off a mountain lion in Millcreek Canyon? On today’s episode of City Cast Salt Lake, host Ali Vallarta talks with Faith Heaton Jolley from the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources about tips on what to do if you find yourself mano a mano with a cougar. Today’s roundup of Hey Salt Lake reader comments covers Barbie’s Utah dream house and collectively our favorite topic: food.

🎀 On Barbie’s Dream House

“No flat roofs in Utah! Come on guys, Barbie and friends will be very sad when they have to buy a new roof because all the snow fell through.” — Kristi C.

🧁 On Cupcakes

“So Cupcake in Millcreek, they might not be super fancy, but I think it's the right amount of fancy. They did the cupcakes for my wedding, and have princess tea parties. They just started doing decoration classes, too! The mini cupcakes are my favorite, and I'm a sucker for chocolate peanut butter.” — Maren S.

🌽🌭 On Corn Dogs

“There used to be The Corndog Factory down at the University Mall in Orem. I used to go there with my dad in the summertime for lunch and we'd get several corndogs every time.

The only comparable thing to The Corndog Factory that I've ever found was Hot Dog on a Stick, which is also pretty fantastic. I don't dip mine in anything. I just wrap a napkin around the dog, pull out the stick and chomp chomp chomp.” — Justin W.

🥪 On Sandwiches

“Pirate O’s has a fantastic deli! I believe it stops selling sandwiches around 2 p.m. each day, but they’re delicious if you can make it in time. My favorite is the turkey and bacon. It has an in-house roasted tomato hazelnut pesto that’s to die for.” — Demi P.

“Freshies, I know the lobster roll may not qualify as a traditional sandwich but it's worth a mention and is exceptional!” — Misti W.

“I recently had the best turkey sandwich I've ever tasted at Trolley Cottage Cafe. It was perfection.” — Alison T.

"Show some respect for the three best sandwich shops in town: Caputo's (hot pastrami), Feldman's (corned beef Rachel), and Robin's Nest (the chicken salad aka Rooster's Call)." — City Cast Salt Lake lead producer Emily Means

Tips for Taking On a Mountain Lion (if You Have To)

It’s hiking season, which means more people are out on the trails and potentially interacting with wildlife. That has us thinking about last year’s mountain lion attack on the popular Pipeline Trail in Millcreek Canyon. You’ve probably hiked there before, too! Host Ali Vallarta talks with Faith Heaton Jolley with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources about what to do if you’re ever face to face with a cougar.
