Surprising things your library card gets you

Good morning! Today we’re sharing a Salt Lake hack about a few of the resources the library has to offer. Do you have a favorite city hack? Send me an email.

What's CITY Talking About?

International Flights From Provo

The Provo Municipal Airport wants to expand to offer international flights, and the city is working to allocate $62 million to fund it. Earlier this year, Provo mayor Michelle Kaufusi talked about plans to make it an international airport, with flights to resort destinations in Mexico. A new terminal opened in July 2022 for regional airlines Breeze and Allegiant. [KUER]

Growing Number of Grasshoppers

It’s not Mormon crickets (yet), but farmers are becoming increasingly concerned over the growing population of another pesky bug: the grasshopper. A lavender farmer in Eden recently had her crop wiped out by grasshoppers. According to the state entomologist, aka an expert in insects, these cyclical increases happen every few years. Since they’re a native species, there’s no eradicating them — there’s only attempting to mitigate the infestation so they’re not a burden on producers. [FOX 13]

SLC Park Rangers

Last summer Salt Lake City introduced a new public safety program that stationed uniformed park rangers at our various city parks. On today’s episode of City Cast Salt Lake, host Ali Vallarta takes a stroll in the park with park ranger Nahuel Tulian to find out how the program has been coming along and what’s the scope of their enforcement. Where Is It?

A stunning stairway to heaven leads up to the doors of the Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork. (@preservationutah/Instagram)

It’s been a hot minute since we’ve done a “Where Is It?” Many of you guessed the Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork. Every year, they host the big Hindu Holi Festival of Colors there. The tradition originated in India. It commemorates the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil. Each color represents a different meaning (red for fertility, green for a new start, etc.)
