City Cast Salt Lake

SLC is getting a new neighborhood

July 6, 2023

Good morning! Ali Vallarta here from the City Cast podcast universe. Terina is out today, so I’m subbing in with a mini-edition.

What's CITY Talking About?

Wanna Join the City Council?

Applications are now open until July 10 for the Salt Lake City Council District 7 seat, which covers a large swath of Sugar House. The seat was vacated by Councilmember Amy Fowler, and the council’s appointee will serve out the rest of her term, which ends on Jan. 2, 2024. At that point, they could run for another term in the general election. [Salt Lake City Government]

SLC Gets a New Neighborhood

The area home to the flour mill and grain silos near 500 S. along Interstate 15 will become “the Silos,” a mixed-use district of housing and businesses. The developers plan to retrofit two existing warehouses into retail spaces, build at least two new residential buildings (including low-income housing), and a park. They hope the district will encourage a new TRAX stop on 400 W. [Building Salt Lake]

Setting Expectations at the Train Track

Do you get annoyed when an unexpected train disrupts your ETA across town? The Salt Lake City Council has voted to invest $150,000 in a pilot program that would indicate how much time remains for a train to pass. The city hopes setting expectations around delays could benefit motorists and pedestrians who might decide to reroute. [Salt Lake Tribune]

You’re Recycling Wrong (Sorry)

We are in the wake of a holiday, which means our recycling bins are teeming. And since I’ve nearly come to blows with my own family about whether or not to recycle a pizza box, I asked McKenna Tupai of Wasatch Front Recycling to do a little mythbusting. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Busting Recycling Myths

It’s a couple days after a big holiday, and you have a tower of pizza boxes and beer cans ready to be tossed out. You’re confident about recycling the aluminum cans. But what about that greasy pizza box? McKenna Tupai, sustainability coordinator for Wasatch Front Waste and Recycling District, talks with host Ali Vallarta about what you can and can’t recycle in Salt Lake.

Have a great day.
