Award-winning journalists 🥲. (Palak Jayswal/Salt Lake Tribune)

Big news! The City Cast Salt Lake team took home some awards at the local SPJ (Society of Professional Journalists) award ceremony, including best newsletter (!!!) and best radio spot news for the podcast.

We’re gagged and gooped, to say the least, and so honored to be recognized among our esteemed peers 🎉

What's CITY Talking About?

The Problem with Dust Storms

A study found that the 2021-22 winter was our dustiest winter yet. Dust storms don’t just negatively impact our air quality, but our snowpack, water supply, and forests, too. It can lead to faster runoff which our water systems aren’t cut out for, and drying forests which lead to more wildfires. [Salt Lake Tribune]

El Cholo Coming to Sugar House

A 100-year-old Los Angeles Mexican restaurant is opening a location in Sugar House this August. El Cholo has become an iconic staple in California since it opened in 1923, originally called the Sonoran Cafe. The SLC location will be the family-owned establishment’s seventh location. [Axios]

The Roe v. Wade Effect on Hookup Culture

Roe v. Wade, the federal ruling protecting abortion access, was overturned one year ago. Since then we’ve seen a legislative effort to ban abortion in Utah, and increased uncertainty about access to all kinds of reproductive healthcare. Today’s episode of City Cast Salt Lake follows host Ali Vallarta on a night out asking Salt Lakers how the end of Roe affects hook-up culture. This episode was just awarded a prize by the Utah Society of Professional Journalists. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

SLC Hookup Culture After Roe: A Time Capsule

It’s been almost a year since the Supreme Court struck down Roe v. Wade, the landmark decision protecting the right to an abortion. Since then, we’ve seen an all-out legislative effort to ban abortion in Utah. Shortly after last year’s SCOTUS decision, host Ali Vallarta hit up the bar scene in Downtown SLC to ask young Salt Lakers how they’re thinking about going out and hooking up in a post-Roe world. Their answers were incredibly candid.

Take care.
