Never give a moose a muffin

June 13, 2023

Good morning! In today’s newsletter, we’re sharing moose safety tips and our interview with the Pho King.

What's CITY Talking About?

It’s Giving NIMBY

Residents of the Avenues neighborhood debated “ghost buses” at the Greater Avenues Community Council meeting. Some residents advocated for discontinuing the bus route that runs late-night and early morning, citing noise issues and very few passengers (hence the ghost term). Proponents argued that the service is heavily utilized by commuters. Data from the Utah Transit Authority shows that ridership in the Avenues increased by over 60% since August 2022. Ultimately, the pro-bus crowd emerged victorious. [Salt Lake Tribune]

It’s Raining, It’s Pouring

There have been more thunderstorms than usual this year. June is normally one of the driest months, but the entire U.S. West region is seeing an increase in precipitation. It’s a good thing, though! Despite Utah’s record-breaking winter, we need the moisture after years of drought. [Axios Salt Lake City]

Smog Lake City

The East Coast is breathing awful air these days, something we know a lot about. Though summer tends to lift inversion from the valley, wildfire smoke and vehicle emissions all make their way into our lungs. Host Ali Vallarta asks indoor air quality investigator Dr. Kerry Kelly how to keep brutal outside air from sneaking inside. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
