Your guide to Utah trail etiquette

Hey, Salt Lake! This indoorsy gal has a summer goal of hiking more. What are your favorite trails? Send me an email.

Plus, keep scrolling for trail etiquette tips to live by, including saying “hey” to passersby.

What's CITY Talking About?

Seeing Triple

Moose triplets were spotted around Summit Park. While it’s not unusual to see calves in the wild, a triplet sighting is quite rare. The adorable baby moose were having fun splashing in puddles and had a major case of the zoomies. [FOX 13]

The Disappearing Orange Flags

You know the ones, the neon orange flags that can be found near crosswalks in Salt Lake City. Liberty Wells resident Sarah Burgess, who sponsors a crosswalk in her neighborhood, noticed the flags she replaces keep going missing. Now, she’s hoping a petition will get the city to install a new traffic safety solution. [KSL]

New Utahraptor Discovery

Scientists have discovered the Utahraptor is 10 million years older than they previously thought. It’s all because of a Mesozoic hot spot (in layman’s terms, this place has a lotta dino bones) near Moab, where they found Utahraptor fossils that established our state dinosaur’s new age. This also closes a big gap in the fossil record, which will allow scientists an even better understanding of our evolutionary history. [KUER]

Permanent Supportive Housing

Everyone agrees the solution to homelessness is housing, but can we be more specific? Salt Lake City is in the process of opening 400 units of permanent supportive housing, and local provider Switchpoint just cut the ribbon on the first hundred or so in Fairpark. On today’s episode of City Cast Salt Lake, host Ali Vallarta talks with Switchpoint executive director Carol Hollowell about the new development. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]

Where Is It?

Made of stone. (Terina Ria/City Cast Salt Lake)

Nobody guessed the location of this kooky statue. Look out for it the next time you’re on 600 E. and 50 S. (near South Temple). It’s at the Upper Colorado River Commission building, which I didn’t know was a thing until now.

A stairway to heaven. (@preservationutah/Instagram)

Where in Utah is this beautiful building located? Hint: It’s not in Salt Lake.

Today on City Cast

I really hope that this year we see a big turn in the mindset of a lot of our elected officials to say, ‘We need to look at something more permanent and not at something that's just the same repeat every year.'
Switchpoint executive director Carol Hollowell on prioritizing housing over shelters

Abandoning Shelters for Permanent Supportive Housing

Last fall, Salt Lake City invested $6 million to help develop 400 units of permanent supportive housing for people experiencing homelessness. So far, only 94 have opened with a project called The Point at Fairpark, a converted motel run by Switchpoint Community Resource Center. Switchpoint executive director Carol Hollowell joins host Ali Vallarta to make the case for charging ahead with this type of resource over emergency shelters.

See you outdoors (maybe).
