What's CITY Talking About?
Another Downtown Building Burns
The sky was filled with smoke Friday night when a vacant commercial building slated for demolition caught fire. A developer recently acquired the Chancellor Building at 220 S. 200 E. near the old Ken Sanders’ bookstore. This is the third building slated for demolition to catch fire in the past year. Movement on the Parleys Canyon Mine
The Utah Division of Air Quality is accepting public feedback on a proposed quarry in Parleys Canyon. Developers want to build the mine, though it’s unpopular with residents and the Salt Lake County Council even passed an ordinance in an attempt to prohibit the project. Still, it appears the DAQ is on track to rubber stamp it. The public comment period for the Granite Construction Company I-80 South Quarry is open until July 27. [Salt Lake Tribune]
Salt Lake’s Newest Pro Sport
League One Volleyball is launching an inaugural women’s season in 2024, and Salt Lake was chosen for a pro team! The league likes Salt Lake’s high youth volleyball participation and enthusiastic fandom (heck ya). [Salt Lake Tribune]
- Could this team eventually play at the nation’s first ever dedicated women’s sports complex? A big idea for the Smith’s Ballpark from local athletes and developers just won the Ballpark NEXT competition. [City Cast Salt Lake 🎧]
