Good morning! In today’s newsletter, we’re talking about getting around Salt Lake like a local. What’s your favorite way?

What's CITY Talking About?
Six Dogs Die in Training Area
Sadly, six dogs died after visiting a dog training area. A group of 13 dogs were at the Lee Kay Conservation Area for training sessions, and it’s suspected the dogs ate some bacteria that was located around the edges of the pond. The area remains closed as the Utah Division of Water Quality waits for test results. [FOX 13]
Bible Ban
Davis School District has banned the Bible from elementary and middle schools due to subject matter of “vulgarity or violence.” After a parent filed to have the book removed, a district-appointed committee reviewed it and deemed the book inappropriate. Now, another parent has filed to have the Book of Mormon removed for similar reasons. This is all in wake of a 2022 law brought forth by conservative groups allowing parents to request books with “indecent” material be removed from school shelves. [Salt Lake Tribune]

A New Idea To Save the GSL?
Although we’ve gained a few feet this year, the Great Salt Lake is still in danger of drying up. Some legislators have taken the issue up with fervor while many activists and scientists say we are far from solving this problem. Everyone’s got ideas, and some are a little outside the box. Like, how about making the Great Salt Lake Utah’s 6th National Park? In today’s episode of City Cast Salt Lake, host Ali Vallarta chats with ethnobotanist Paul Alan Cox about the prospect. Where Is It?

“The Fairly OddParents” homes are located near the Sprouts on 200 S. and 700 E. Shout out to Conor F. for guessing it right!

Next up, we have a kooky statue holding up a building that I found driving down a random street in Salt Lake City. Do you know where it’s located? I have no idea the story behind this guy, so bonus points if you know the story, too.

Great Salt Lake National Park?
Great Salt Lake National Park. It has a nice ring to it, right? That’s what ethnobotanist Paul Alan Cox is suggesting as an intervention to the ongoing crisis at the lake. Cox makes the case to host Ali Vallarta that it’s possible for everyone — tribal leaders, brine shrimp farmers, and even Republican lawmakers — to be represented in what could be Utah’s sixth national park.
I sure think you’re great, Great Salt Lake 🎶
